THE RUNDOWN
DBU (23-9, 9-3) earned their fourth sweep of 2023 with a 7-2 victory over UAB (10-21, 3-9) on Saturday at Horner Ballpark. It was DBU's first sweep of a conference series this season.
In the bottom of the third,
Miguel Santos broke up a string of zeros on the scoreboard with a solo shot over the center field wall of Horner Ballpark for his third homer in the last four games.
Â
Grant Jay crushed a solo home run of his own in the next inning on a line drive to left field for a 2-0 DBU lead.
Â
With runners on second and third in the sixth,
Luke Heefner ground into a double play to push across the third-base runner,
Kodie Kolden, for the Patriots' third tally.
Â
On the mound,
Zach Heaton had one of the best showings of his career. The redshirt senior 6.0 innings and allowed only one run on two UAB hits while punching out seven Blazers and walking none.
Â
In relief of Heaton,
Brady Rose conceded an inherited runner in the seventh—his only blemish in an otherwise near-perfect outing (2.0 innings pitched, four strikeouts, zero walks).
Â
Ahead, 3-1, DBU batted around in their last offensive frame. Three consecutive doubles by Kolden, Jay, and
George Specht drove in two runs for the Patriots. A Santos sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk by
Ethan Mann finished the scoring of a four-run inning for DBU.
Â
Reece Beuter made his 11th appearance of the year in the ninth, holding UAB to a run and closing out the sweep for the Patriots.
