THE RUNDOWN
The Lady Patriots bounced back from a loss on Friday morning by topping Fresno Pacific in straight sets in their second game of the Maverick Fall Classic in Grand Junction, Colorado. Neither team claimed a hitting percentage better than .121 in the first two sets before DBU registered a .452 clip in the third.
Â
The Lady Patriots (4-2) opened play with a quick trio of scores, but the Sunbirds (2-5) answered by taking a 6-4 a. DBU engineered a six-point spurt highlighted by a pair of aces by
Aryn Walton and a couple of kills by
Delaney Fuller for a four-point advantage. The difference narrowed to as little as two, but the Lady Patriots controlled the frame for a favorable 1-0 set count.
Â
The second set played much like the latter stages of the first. Neither squad tallied more than three consecutive points at a time until DBU went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-13 lead. Fresno Pacific made a close finish of the frame, but the Lady Patriots snuck out of the set eyeing a sweep.
Â
With their backs against the wall, the Sunbirds jumped to a 9-5 advantage in the third, forcing DBU head coach
Jordan Fish to call a timeout. Fish's team responded with a 13-4 stretch, moving the Lady Patriots ahead, 18-13. That run put DBU in a comfortable position to finish the match in three sets.Â
