THE RUNDOWN
Saturday afternoon, DBU (11-7, 5-5 LSC) fell to Angelo State (14-7, 8-2 LSC) in what was easily the most electric game of the season to date. Both teams entered the contest coming off of three-set losses suffered the night before, and the two Lone Star Conference heavyweights slugged it out for five sets.
Angelo State claimed set one on the backs of a spread-out attack and a .343 hitting percentage, but DBU kept up offensively, posting a .342 clip in the opening frame.Â
Karly Wells put down six kills in the first set to kickstart a 24-kill performance.
The Lady Patriots went on to dominate the second set of the match, winning 25-16, breaking a set-loss streak of five that went back to last Saturday's loss against St. Edward's.
After claiming the ever-pivotal set three, DBU held all the momentum in The Burg Center, as the white-out crowd went nuts for every point scored during the middle frame.
However, the tide would turn mightily in the fourth, as the Rambelles rode a .355 hitting percentage to a dominant set four win (25-14). From the baseline, Gabi Ashcraft handed ASU a 7-0 lead to open the frame, landing two aces during the lengthy run.
In the fifth and final set, both offenses had their best frame of the afternoon, but the Rambelles would end up taking the set and the match in deuce play, winning 17-15. The game ended in unfortunate fashion, as Angelo's Krizia Perez landed an ace that kissed the net and rolled over, falling into no-man's land.
