Lady Patriots Wins Two of Three in Opening Weekend Action in Arkansas

THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Women's Tennis team brought in the 2024 spring season with two wins and one loss in Conway, Arkansas. The Lady Patriots defeated Ouachita Baptist 4-3 Thursday and suffered a 2-5 defeat against Southern Arkansas Friday before defeating Henderson State 4-0. 

In Thursday's win over the Tigers, the Lady Patriots' Leonie Schondelmaier claimed a 6-2,6-3 win over Ouachita Baptist's Austynn Crocker at the line 1 singles position. In doubles play, Isabella Arana Rios and Sofia Teran teamed up for a 6-4 win at line 1, while Caroline Hudson and Madalyn Smelley (6-4) and Sarah Castleberry and Emily Buchanan (6-1) teamed up to also win in doubles. 

Leonie Schondelmaier picked up a singles win at line 1 in Friday's defeat versus Southern Arkansas. At the same time, Isabella Aran Rios also picked up a singles win at the line 4 in straight sets. Caroline Hudson and Madalyn Smelley captured DBU's lone win in doubles in a 6-3 victory. 

On Saturday, Leonie Schondelmaier claimed a 6-3, 7-6 victory at the line 1 spot over Henderson State's Mulan Kamoe. At the same time, Caroline Hudson and Madalyn Smelley each secured a win at the line 2 and 3 positions. In doubles play, Caroline Hudson and Madalyn Smelley picked up a 6-3 win at the line 1 position. Sarah Castleberry and Emily Buchanan also notched a 6-4 victory, capping off scoring at the line 2 position.

"We had great team wins this weekend. The girls showed great resilience, and the matches were very competitive. I am proud of our seniors Caroline, Sofi, and Sarah for stepping up and winning some of the big matches this weekend."
 
UP NEXT
The Patriots return to action on February 16-17 when they host three matches against Texas Weseyelan, Texas A&M- Texarkana, and Southeastern Oklahoma State at the Arlington Tennis Center.
