DBU Women’s Tennis Makes Historic Sweet 16 Debut After Thrilling Win Over No. 11 St. Mary’s

THE RUNDOWN
For the first time in program history, the DBU Women's Tennis team is headed to the NCAA Sweet 16 after a dramatic 4-3 victory over No. 11 St. Mary's in the South Central Region prelims. The win marks the second consecutive season the Lady Patriots have ended the Rattlers' season, last year knocking them out of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in the quarterfinals, 4-1. This time, the stakes were even higher.

DBU set the tone early in doubles, with the No. 1 team of Madalyn Smelley and Isabella Arana Rios earning a hard-fought 7-5 victory. On court two, Emily Buchanan and Jenna Payne secured a 6-4 win, clinching the doubles point for the Patriots. The match at line three went unfinished with momentum leaning both ways, highlighting just how tight the doubles action was across the board.

In singles play, it was a battle from start to finish. Smelley quickly added to DBU's lead with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at line two. The Rattlers would fight back, tying the match and keeping the pressure high on the remaining courts. The match came down to razor-thin margins as both sides traded blows deep into the final sets.

At line six, Andrea Delgado came up clutch, delivering a gritty 7-5, 6-4 win to give DBU a 3-2 lead. With everything riding on the final point, it was Buchanan, recently named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, who sealed the deal. After dropping the first set, she stormed back to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 and send the Patriots into uncharted territory.
With the victory, the Lady Patriots continue their postseason journey and prove they belong on the national stage.

DBU HEAD COACH WADE MORGAN ON THE TEAM'S HISTORIC WIN
"Today, the girls showed incredible determination and guts. St. Mary's is such a well-coached team, and we knew we were going to have to fight for every single match. Our hearts are full, and we are grateful for the opportunity to keep going.
