THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Patriots (33-13, 16-5 CUSA) completed their sweep against the Florida International Panthers (26-22, 9-11 CUSA) Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark. In a bullpen game, the Patriots only needed four arms to finish the job this afternoon.
Mason Peters had only given up one homer this year coming into his start today, but FIU brought three to the plate in the first two innings via longballs.Â
DBU began to claw back in the bottom of the second, plating two runs on a Cody Grebeck single up the middle.Â
The Pats would take the lead in the next frame while showing off incredible speed. Ben Tryon tied the game with a hustle double and later scored the go-ahead run from second on Dylan Schlaegel's infield single.
Liam Watt replaced Peters in the fourth inning and threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Keaton Grady lined a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to make it a 5-3 game.
Mason Swinney relieved Watt with two outs in the seventh inning and would be removed for Jerrod Jenkins in the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots tacked on four more runs on the backs of a Michael Dattalo bases-clearing double and a Ben Tryon RBI single.
Jerrod Jenkins retired the side in order in the ninth inning, getting all three Panther hitters to ground out.
