The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball team opened the 2010 season with a 13-2 victory over UT-Arlington on Friday afternoon in Arlington, Texas.
Picking up the win for DBU was Junior
Brandon Williamson, pitching six innings allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out four, getting his first win of his DBU career. Junior
Jared Stafford picked up his first save of the year, pitching three scoreless innings, while allowing one hit and striking out four.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior
Tyler Robbins, who went three for five with one RBI and Senior
Austin Knight who finished the day, two for three with two RBI. Also picking up two RBI were Freshman
Austin Elkins, Senior
Ryan Enos, and Senior
Travis Meiners.
The Mavericks struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning on four hits and two wild pitches, taking an early 2-0 lead.
DBU responded with six runs in the top half of the fourth inning. Junior
Jason Krizan walked to lead off the inning and Meiners hit a two-run homerun over the right centerfield wall, to tie the game at two. The Patriots added four unearned following the Meiners homerun, after Junior
Ryan Thompson reached third on a dropped fly by the UTA leftfielder and Sophomore
Ryan Behmanesh reached first on a fielder's choice. Junior
Chris Haney added a sacrifice fly and Knight singled to score Behmanesh. Enos added a RBI double to score Knight and Robbins followed with a RBI double of his own to give DBU the 6-2 lead.
The Patriots added another run in the sixth inning, after Behmanesh doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Haney and scored on a sacrifice fly by Knight, increasing the lead to 7-2.
Freshman
Duncan McAlpine hit a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning, the first of his collegiate career, scoring Robbins and Krizan. Enos added his first homerun of the season in the eighth inning to give DBU an 11-2 cushion.
In the top of the ninth, DBU added another homerun, this one the two-run variety by Elkins, in his first at bat of his collegiate career, scoring Meiners and giving DBU a 13-2 lead.
The Patriots will resume action on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field in doubleheader action against UTA beginning at 1:00.
