The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball Team improved to 3-0 on the season, after defeating UTA in both games of the doubleheader, by the score of 9-4 and 11-6 on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field.
In game one, Senior Ryan Millard picked up the win, his first of the season, pitching two and a third innings allowing two hits and striking out one. Sophomore Ben Palmer pitched an inning and two-thirds, scattering two hits, to get the victory.
Leading DBU at the plate for the day was Freshman Duncan McAlpine going five for five with seven RBI, including his second and third homeruns of the season. Junior Ryan Thompson and Senior Travis Meiners each had four RBI on the day.
In game one, UT-Arlington managed two runs in the top of the first inning off of Freshman Stuart Pudenz, on three hits, including a two-run homerun by Maverick centerfielder Michael Choice.
DBU responded with four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Senior Ryan Enos reached on an error to lead off the game and advanced to second after Tyler Robbins walked. Meiners followed with a hit by and pitch and McAlpine drew a bases loaded walk to score Enos. Thompson added a two RBI single and Sophomore Ryan Behmanesh followed with a RBI double, giving the Patriots a 4-1 lead.
The Patriots added another run in the second inning. Junior Jason Krizan singled and scored on a RBI single by McAlpine, increasing the lead to 5-2.
UTA closed the score to 5-4, scoring two runs on two hits and two walks, in the top of the third inning
McAlpine hit a two-run homerun scoring Meiners, chasing UTA starter Logan Bawcom from the game and increasing the DBU lead to 7-4.
The Patriots managed two more runs in the seventh inning, after Krizan singled and stole second and score on a RBI double by Meiners. McAlpine followed with a RBI single to score Meiners and to increase the lead to 9-4.
In the second game of the day, DBU scored first in the second inning on another two-run homerun by McAlpine. DBU added to their lead in the third inning, scoring two more runs. Robbins singled to start the inning and scored later in the inning, on a sacrifice fly by Meiners. McAlpine followed with a single and advanced to second on walk by Thompson. Behmanesh added a RBI single, giving DBU a 4-0 lead.
UTA got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring two runs off of DBU starter Freshman Aaron Gilbreath, who pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out five.
The Patriots responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Krizan and Meiners both singled to start the inning and scored on a RBI single by Thompson, making the score 6-2.
Senior Austin Knight hit a solo homerun to start the sixth inning and Enos followed with a walk. Robbins added a base hit bunt and Krizan and Meiners each added RBI singles to push the score to 9-2.
DBU added an unearned run in the seventh, after Haney singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Knight and scored on a sacrifice fly by Robbins, leaving the score 10-2.
The Mavericks close the margin to 10-6 in the top of the eighth inning, scoring four runs, three of which were scored on a homerun by Choice, his second of the day.
Meiners hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to increase the DBU lead to 11-6, his second of the season.
The Patriots resume action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Austin, Texas, to take on the #1 ranked Texas Longhorns. First pitch is slated for 3:00.
