The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team was dealt their first loss of the season on Thursday evening, as they fell to UT-Arlington, 4-5. DBU (4-1) held a four-run lead headed into the eighth, but the Mavericks (1-3) scored five runs in the final two innings to win their first contest of the season.
Senior
Brandon Williamson got the start on the mound for the Patriots and was phenomenal through six. The right handed ace allowed only three hits and struck out five in his six innings of work. Sophomore
Duncan McAlpine was dealt the loss after pitching one inning and allowing one run on two hits.
The Patriots took an early lead thanks to a four-hit first that resulted in three runs. With two runners on, Senior
Jason Krizan drove in the game's first run with a RBI double to left field that scored Sophomore
Austin Elkins. Juniors
Joel Hutter and
Kenny Hatcher each picked up RBI singles later in the inning, giving the Patriots a 3-0 lead.
Krizan picked up his sixth RBI of the season in the fourth to give DBU a 4-0 advantage. His single to center field pushed Senior
Tyler Robbins across the plate, who had reached on a single of his own.
Still trailing by four runs through seven, the Maverick bats finally got going in the bottom of the eighth inning as they put together a four-run rally. Michael Guerra led off the inning with a double, followed by a pair of singles from Preston Beck and Greg McCall to make it a 4-1 game with runners on first and second and no outs.
After a Patriot error that handed the Mavericks their second run of the night, UTA completed their rally with a single and a two-RBI double to center that knotted the game at four.
The Patriots were unable to get anything going in the top of the ninth, opening the door for the home team. The Mavericks took advantage with a RBI single that pushed the winning run across the plate, as they handed DBU their first loss of the season.
The Patriots will return to Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington tomorrow, as they continue tournament play against Missouri State. The first pitch against the Bears is slated for 11:00 a.m.
