Patriots Drop Final Game of DBU Invitational to Wichita State

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team dropped their final game of the DBU Invitational Saturday evening, falling to Wichita State, 6-2. The loss drops the Patriots to 7-4 on the season.

Senior Jared Stafford picked up the loss for the Patriots, his first of the season. Stafford threw six and two thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits, and striking out five.

After two scoreless innings, Wichita State broke an even game in the top of the third after Preston Springer's two-run homer cleared the right field wall. Springer's first home run of the season gave the Shockers a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots cut the lead in half with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff double, a single, and a walk loaded the bases for Senior Tyler Robbins, who pushed the first Patriot run across the plate after reaching on a WSU error.

DBU tacked on another run in the bottom half of the fifth, courtesy of Sophomore Austin Elkins. Junior Landon Anderson led off with a single, stole second, and later advanced to third on a Patriot groundout. Elkins then delivered a single to right field, earning his team-leading 14th RBI of the season, and knotting the game at two runs apiece.

However, the Shockers closed out the final three innings with two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, and one in the ninth to seal the 6-2 win.

The Patriots will head to Washington tomorrow for a five-game road trip against Washington State and the University of Washington. They will open with a two-game series against Washington State on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
