Shockers Answer Patriot Ninth Inning Rally

Box Score

One night after defeating Dallas Baptist (28-14) by ten runs, the Wichita State Shockers (27-19) found a much more cruel way to send DBU away in defeat on Saturday afternoon in Kansas. The Patriots rallied for four runs in the ninth inning, after not putting together much on offense for the bulk of the game, to take a one run lead on the Shockers heading to the bottom half of the inning. Wichita State, however, put together a rally of their own off Patriot closer Stuart Pudenz (5-1) and walked-off Tyler Field at Eck Stadium with an 8-7 win to push DBU to their fourth loss in their last five games. Cale Elam (4-3) was credited with the win after blowing a three-run lead in the last inning as the Shockers won their sixth straight game over the Patriots, including five straight at Eck Stadium.

DBU scored two runs in the first after starter Kris Gardner walked the first two batters of the game and Joel Hutter doubled to right center with one out. Gardner would also allow a single run in the fourth inning after KJ Alexander singled to right with two outs to drive in a run but that would be all the Patriots would muster against the lefthander. He threw 6.1 innings and walked four, but only gave up three hits while striking out four. Wichita would score a single run in every inning from the third through the eighth and would score the final two runs of the game off Pudenz in the ninth. Starter Taylor Massey threw five innings for the Patriots and allowed four runs, Michael Smith threw three innings and allowed two runs and Pudenz recorded only one out while blowing the save.

The Patriots and Shockers are set to play the final game of the weekend on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The tarp is on the field with a 60% chance of rain in the area throughout the day beginning after midnight. DBU will look to avoid being swept for the first time since the second weekend of the year in Houston against Rice. Andrew Elkins will take the ball for DBU in search of his third win on the season.
