Lady Patriots Roll Past Hilltoppers

Box Score

Led by the offensive trio of Kristin Secord, Tadam Mergener, and Erika Papadeas, the Dallas Baptist Lady Patriots (5-3, 3-0) defeated conference opponent St. Edward's (4-3, 2-1) on Tuesday night in Dallas, 3-1. With the win, DBU moves to 3-0 in Heartland Conference play and advances their overall win streak to four straight. The Lady Patriots held the Hilltoppers to just a .083 hitting percentage in the first game as they cruised, 25-19, and then held on in a tight game two, 25-23. Game three saw a late comeback attempt by DBU fall short before they scored the first five points of the deciding final game to win going away, 25-15.

Cameron Hartson and Mergener teamed up to lead the Lady Patriot defense with 21 and 20 digs, respectively, but it was Mergener and the DBU offense that set the tone for the match. The freshman outside hitter, and reigning Conference Hitter of the Week, ignited the large DBU contingent in the Burg Center with several thundering kills while the steady play of Secord and Papadeas never allowed the Hilltopper offense to get going. Tyler Bradsher and Kaycie Bird chipped in 26 and 23 assists, respectively, as DBU hit .251 for the match and came up with 83 digs.

The Lady Patriots will return to the Burg Center on Friday afternoon for a non-conference tilt against Arkansas Tech at 3:00 pm. They will then travel to Cameron University for another non-conference match before returning to Heartland Confence play on September 20 as they host Newman University at 7:00 pm.
