After receiving a much needed 12 day break the Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer team returns to the pitch Saturday at McMurry University for a noon kickoff. It will be a familiar opponent for the Patriots (2-4), after previously defeating the Warhawks 3-2 at Patriots Soccer Field in their most recent outing. The weekend slate officially begins Heartland Conference play.
LAST MATCHUP – Playing in its home opener after a six game road trip, DBU pounced on McMurry (1-5-1) for a 3-0 lead, two goals coming off the foot of sophomore
Brian Robertson. The Patriots staked a 2-0 halftime lead and Robertson pushed the lead to three early in the second half, before the Warhawks responded with a rally of their own.
Freshman goalkeeper,
Mason Stringer came up with five big saves in his collegiate debut. The victory snapped a four game losing skid and was the first for DBU since the season opener.
ROBETSON'S CAREER STRETCH – The forward has been the hottest player for the Patriot's soccer team in their last three games. The Midlothian, Texas, native has tallied at least a point dating back to the Adam's State game in mid-September which came from an assist. Robertson then notched his first career goal in an eventual overtime loss at Eastern New Mexico the following week.
In the team's most recent game, Robertson recorded a season best five points to count towards his team-high eight this season. The second year starter contributed to all three goals in the thrilling game, assisting sophomore
Christian Lampe on the first score, before punching in two goals to also claim the team lead in goals.
SCHOBER PREVENTION – Entering his second season as the starting goalkeeper,
Chuck Schober continues impressing after compiling a .696 save percentage his rookie season. Through six games the McKinney, Texas, native has seen 511:22 minutes in the net, and all but one game has gone at least the distance of 90:00.
Schober has pulled in 23 saves so far this season to bring the sophomore within 13 of the century mark. His season best came at Eastern New Mexico with nine, coming one shy of his career-high. That feat did occur against McMurry in last season's NCCAA Regional Tournament.
SCOUTING MCMURRY – Only one game separates the last time these teams met on the field, when the Warhawks suffered a 7-0 shutout against St. Edward's University in Abilene. McMurry has dropped back-to-back games after earning its first victory shutting out Howard Payne University.
The first meeting in Dallas counted as a non-conference match, so Saturday's game will mark the Heartland Conference opener for both squads. DBU is 1-3 against the Warhawks since its inaugural year in 2012.
WORTH NOTING – Dallas Baptist opened the year with eight of its first nine games played on the road. The upcoming Monday's matchup against St. Edward's concludes that stretch and will be last scheduled away game for the month. Five of the Patriot's six games have been decided by one goal. DBU is 2-3 in these games and 0-2 in overtime games thus far.
