Lady Patriots Sweep Visiting Midwestern State

Box Score

The DBU Lady Patriot Volleyball Team took a brief break from Heartland Conference play, Tuesday, pinning a 3-0 sweep on visiting Midwestern State University. The win completes the season sweep of the Mustangs, following a 3-2 DBU win in Wichita Falls back on Oct. 22.

DBU (14-15) maintained a small lead throughout the majority of the first set, leading by as many as eight on their way to a 25-18 win. The second set took a similar path as the Lady Patriots led the majority of the way, though the Mustangs kept things closer, with DBU closing on a 7-1 run to take the frame, 25-18.

The third set started with DBU streaks of four and five, giving the Lady Patriots a comfortable early lead. The home club remained in the control throughout the remainder of the set, eventually finishing the 25-17 win, completing the 3-0 sweep.

"I've been stressing all the work we've been doing on offense, and we're starting to see the results," said DBU Head Coach Cathy Kokel. "We are building on the hard work that has been going in and starting to see that pay off."

Tadam Mergener led all players with 14 kills, also pitching in 13 digs to earn the double-double. Tiara Iwegbu added 10 kills, with Erika Papadeas earning eight. Both players also contributed on the defensive end, with Papadeas earning 13 digs and Iwegbu knocking down five total blocks.

Tyler Bradsher and Kaycie Bird shared time at setter, earning 19 and 16 assists, respectively. Bradsher also added 12 digs on the defensive end. Cameron Hartson led all players with 19 digs.

"Ty (Bradsher) did a great job feeding Tiara (Iwegbu) in the middle tonight," added Kokel. "Carly (Hess) played well, really the blockers altogether had a good game."

For Midwestern State (15-12), Caitlin Wallace led the way with 13 kills, with 27 assists coming from Marija Jovanovic. Libero Madelyn Johnson led three players in double figures, totaling 18 digs for the visiting club.

Heartland Conference play continues, Thursday at 7 p.m., as DBU hosts St. Mary's University. Regular season play concludes with another home conference matchup, Saturday, against Texas A&M International. That match is slated for a noon start.
