Volleyball Falls to No.11 Washburn

Box Score

Competing in their second match of Mary Beth Sudduth Invitational, Friday, the DBU Lady Patriot Volleyball Team dropped a 3-0 decision to 11th-ranked Washburn University, 25-21, 25-10, and 25-12.

"We played a lot of people today, due to our starters needing rest," said DBU Head Coach Cathy Kokel. "I saw a lot of good things from a lot of people on our team."

DBU (4-6) will look to bounce back with a pair of matches, Saturday, the first a Heartland Conference contest against host-University of Arkansas-Fort Smith at 10 a.m. Both clubs enter the match 2-0 in early conference play. DBU's final match of the weekend will be against Southern Nazarene at 2 p.m.

"We are here this weekend to play the conference match," stressed Kokel. "So we will learn from today and hopefully apply that tomorrow."

In Friday evening's contest, the Lady Patriots and Ichabods traded leads early in the first set, and things remained tight, with DBU as close as 23-21 late. Washburn scored a pair of points from there, however, finishing the 25-21 score.

The second and third sets took a similar path, as DBU struggled to climb back after early Washburn leads. The Ichabods claimed the second frame, 25-10, and the third, 25-12.

Tiara Iwegbu led the Dallas Baptist attack, turning in eight kills. Tyler Bradsher and Kaycie Bird continue to share time at the setter position, pitching in 16 and 11 assists, respectively. Defensively, Cameron Hartson earned a match-high 14 digs.

Leanna Willer led a balanced Washburn (8-3) attack with 14 kills, to go with nine digs. Kelsey Lewis earned 12 digs to lead the Ichabods, with Abby Wittman passing off 33 assists.
