Women's Tennis Clinches Home Victory

The DBU Women's Team showed their fight, determination and experience today in an 8-1 victory over Metro State.  The #3 doubles team of Lyvia Gomes and Lindsay Wilkerson took the win over W. Vaswig and K. Miller 8-3.  Once they were off the court, DBU also took the #1 doubles victory of Amanda Richter and Cassandra Wennerstrom over W. Holopainen and C. Oropeza 8-4.  With DBU now up 2-0, all eyes were on #2 doubles court with DBU's Leah Rutt and Leah Smith battling out a close match with N. Holopainen and T. Larreau.  Rutt and Smith had overcome a 5-2 deficit and clinched the third doubles point with an 8-6 finish.

The singles courts proved to be similar to the doubles matches in that DBU got off to a strong set and took every first set on all 6 courts.  The first player to come off was Lindsay Wilkerson at #5 singles, quickly followed by DBU's #3 player Cassandra Wennerstrom.  The win for the Patriots had now been sealed.  Amanda Richter retired and Leah Smith had a solid win over C. Oropeza, 6-4, 6-2.  Finally, Leah Rutt defeated the nation's #28 best player,  N. Holopainen in a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.  Lyvia Gomes then continued with the momentum and clinched her point against K. Miller.

"Obviously, I am happy for the team to get a win today.  But more importantly than that, I am happy to see their grit and desire to compete hard and to win.  We played solid doubles on all three lines and that gave the team a ton of confidence going into singles.  I am super proud of Leah and Leah for coming from behind and climbing their way back into the match and ultimately winning it.  No doubt Leah Rutt had the best win of her career by beating a top player in the South Central Region and in the nation.  Her work ethic and emotional maturity are not only some of her best tools but propel our team forward as well.  I am super proud of each girl and the spirit they exuded today."

Dallas Baptist continues its busy week of action by traveling to St. Edward's University Friday for a 1 PM affair. The Patriots will then head to Texas Lutheran for a 2 PM match on Saturday.
