Box Score
Dallas Baptist dropped their second consecutive game and the series to Sam Houston State, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas. Junior right-hander,
Cy Sneed, gave the Patriots (5-2) a solid outing, tossing five-and-two-thirds of an inning, allowing just two runs on six hits. Offensively, DBU could manage just one run on the day off of Bearkat starter, Dirk Masters, while the Sam Houston State (7-1) bullpen shutout the Patriots in the final four frames.
Â
Scoreless through the first four innings, DBU struck first in the fifth inning. After reaching base on a lead-off single,
Justin Wall would come around to score from third on a sacrifice bunt by
Camden Duzenack.Â
Â
The Bearkats would tie the game in their half of the fifth, when Corey Toups led off the inning with a double and would eventually touch home on a sacrifice fly by Colt Atwood.Â
Â
Tied at one apiece in the sixth inning, Sam Houston State scratched across the go-ahead run, as Carter Burgess came in to score when Patriot reliever,
Josh Urban, walked Luke Plucheck with the bases loaded. That would be all the runs the Bearkats would need, as their bullpen would silence the DBU offense the rest of the way. Redshirt-freshman, Sam Odom, came out of the pen in relief of Masters and retired all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings, before giving way to SHSU closer, Jason Simms.
Â
Sam Houston State would tack on two more runs in the seventh, on a Burgess two-run single off of
Brandon Koch.Â
Â
Trailing 4-1 in the ninth, DBU pieced together a two-out rally, beginning with a
David Martinelli walk. Following a Bearkat error that allowed
Trevin Sonnier to reach base, pinch-hitter,
Drew Turbin, was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded and down to their final out,
Mike Wesolowski grounded out to short to end the game.
Â
On the afternoon, the Patriots stranded 10 men on base and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. "It was a day of missed opportunities at the plate," DBU Head Coach,
Dan Heefner remarked after the game. "I thought our guys had good approaches at the plate, we just didn't get the big hit when we needed it."
Â
DBU will travel to UT-San Antonio on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm. The last time the Patriots and UTSA met was in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship Game on May 26, 2013. The Roadrunners won that game, 11-4, to advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Â
Live audio coverage of Tuesday's game will be available on the Patriot Broadcasting Network at
www.dbupatriots.com/showcase, with the Patriots Pre-Game Show starting at 2:30 pm.
