Patriots Blank Missouri State to Take Series

Box Score

Dallas Baptist used another ninth inning rally to defeat Missouri State, 2-0, in game two of a three-game series.  Tied 0-0 in the top of the ninth, Trevin Sonnier came around to score on a throwing error by MSU starting pitcher, Jon Harris, after Mike Wesolowski pushed a bunt down the third base line.  Three batters later, Justin Wall beat out a ground ball with the bases loaded, avoiding a double play and allowing Wesolowski to score from third.

That would be all the offense DBU (14-4) would need on a day that starter, Cy Sneed, turned in one of the finest outings of his career.  The junior from Twin Falls, Idaho, tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just five hits, and striking out seven.  "Cy's had some great starts throughout his career, but that ranks among the best," DBU Head Coach, Dan Heefner remarked following the game.  " He had great command of all of his pitches and had an excellent plan in place versus their lineup."

Sneed was able to work out of a couple of jams on the day with runners in scoring position.  In the first inning, with runners at first and second and one out, the right-hander struck out clean-up hitter, Matt Fultz and then induced a pop out to first off the bat of Spencer Johnson.  After cruising through the next three frames, Sneed again ran into trouble in the fifth.  With runners on the corners and two outs,  Sneed picked off Tate Matheny at first base on a third-to-first move.  "It's something that I work at all the time and has become something that I can go to in those types of situations," Sneed said.

In the ninth, Sonnier's lead-off ground-rule double sparked the Patriots two-run rally.  It's the second consecutive game in which Sonnier has come through with a big hit in the ninth.  In game one, he drove in the winning run on a two-out RBI single up the middle.

Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Sneed gave way to Joseph Shaw out of the bullpen.  The sophomore right-hander retired the side in order, striking out  Johnson to end the game.

The win extends the Patriots win streak to five and matches the team's best start since the 2001 season.  Game three, which was regularly scheduled for Sunday, will be played as part of a double-header on Saturday, due to the inclement weather expected to arrive tomorrow.  Cory Taylor is scheduled to get the start for DBU in the series finale.
