Box Score
The DBU Patriot Baseball Team has earned their fair share of come-from-behind wins in 2014, but Saturday came up on the short end of the comeback, dropping a 6-3 contest to visiting Utah Valley University. DBU falls to 15-7 and will look to bounce back quickly for Sunday's finale.
Â
The Patriots carried a 3-1 lead into the ninth, riding on the back of outstanding pitching from starter
Cy Sneed. Utah Valley was able to piece together a comeback in the ninth, however, scoring five runs in the inning to take a 6-3 win.
Â
Both starting pitchers looked comfortable through the first three innings, with only one hit allowed, a double by Utah Valley's Beau Kallas. The Wolverines broke the scoreless tie in the fourth however, as Kallas scored from third on a Seth Rhineer single to left.
Â
DBU immediately responded in the bottom of the fourth, tallying their first hit, a
Daniel Salters double to center, scoring
David Martinelli who had previously reached on a walk.
Austin Listi then stepped up and knocked the very next pitch into center field, scoring Salters to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Patriots extended their lead by one in the bottom of the sixth, as Salters drilled a Patrick Wolfe pitch over the right field wall. The DBU pitching combination of Sneed and
Joseph Shaw took control from the fifth until the eighth, combining to allow just two hits.
Â
Things came unravelled in the ninth, however, as Shaw, and eventually
Brandon Koch, together surrendered five runs to the Wolverines, running the score to the eventual 6-3 final. Chad Michaud came on to work the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Â
Salters was the top producer for the DBU club, earning a pair of hits, a pair of RBI, also crossing the plate twice. Martinelli tallied one hit and one run, with Listi adding a hit and an RBI.
Nash Knight came up hitless but was able to draw a pair of walks, now tied with Salters for the team lead at 19.
Â
Sneed received no decision after allowing one run on five hits in seven innings. The junior struck out five and walked just one. Shaw (1-1) is pegged with the loss after working one inning plus, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on two hits. Koch allowed one run on two hits in his one inning of work.
Â
For Utah Valley (7-15), Kallas was joined by Greyson Bogden turning in two-hit performances, combining for three RBI and two runs scored. After a solid beginning, UVU starter Ryan Evans was pulled after just 3 1/3 innings of work, allowing two runs on two hits, walking four. Tyler Sturdivant moves to 1-1 after working the final two outs of the eighth inning for the Wolverines.
Â
The third and final game of the series is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, Sunday.
