Box Score The DBU Patriot Baseball Team opened a Saturday doubleheader, dropping a 13-1 decision to visiting University of Evansville. The loss drops DBU to 25-13, 5-3 in MVC play. The two clubs compete in game two, the finale of the three-game series, Saturday evening at Horner Ballpark.
After walking to lead off the bottom of the first,
Drew Turbin advanced on a wild pitch, a ground out, and scored when
Daniel Salters grounded into a fielder's choice, giving the Patriots an early 1-0 lead. The Purple Aces responded in the top of the second, tying the contest at one with yet another two-out run, coming on a double by Shain Showers, scoring Boomer Synek.
Evansville (24-13, 6-2) extended their lead to 3-1 in the third, scoring single runs on a ground out by Kyle Pollock and a single by Synek. The visitors added three more in the fifth, coming on a two run single by Pollock and RBI ground out by Eric McKibban. The Purple Aces again broke things open late, scoring a pair of runs in the seventh and five in the eighth, ending the contest early by the final of 13-1.
DBU was led on the offensive end by
Austin Listi, who earned a pair of hits, including his first triple of the 2014 campaign.
Mike Wesolowski earned a hit in only one official plate appearance, walking twice and reaching on a hit by pitch, extending his hit streak to 12.
KJ Alexander also talled one hit, with Salters earning the lone RBI for DBU.
Cy Sneed (6-2) labored through six innings of work, taking his first loss since Feb. 23 at Sam Houston. The junior allowed eight runs on 12 hits, striking out five and walking three.
Evansville earns the series win with the game one win, DBU's first Missouri Valley series loss. The Purple Aces were led by four-hit performances by Kevin Kaczmarski and Synek. Kaczmarski led the club with three runs scored, with Synek joined by Pollock, each with five RBI.
Connor Strain improves to 3-3 for Evansville, working six innings and allowing the one run on three hits, striking out three, but walking six. Matt Rodgers came on to work two shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three.
