The Dallas Baptist Women's Tennis Team defeated McMurry 5-4 on Thursday afternoon of the NCCAA Regional Tournament. DBU (15-8) has won five in a row, including its last three-straight being determined by one set point.
In doubles competition, the Lady Patriots fell into a 1-2 hole after only winning the second set which was completed by senior duo,
Leah Rutt, and
Leah Smith. They knocked off Jessica Bentley/Bree Brosig by a total of 8-6.
DBU was able to secure the match taking four out of six bouts in the singles competition. A setback in the #6 line moved the squad back 1-3, but four-straight wins would march the team back and pull a victory over the Heartland Conference foe.
The top three slots paced the Lady Patriots with #1-slot Rutt edging Lauren Renner 7-6 (7-2), and 6-0. Freshman,
Cassandra Wennerstrom, topped Shayne Cook 6-2, 6-1 in the #2 line. Extending her winning streak to 12 in a row, sophomore,
Amanda Richter, defeated Salitza Abrantes 6-1, 6-2.
The final set victory to take Thursday's affair was #5-slotted junior,
Lyvia Gomes. She defeated Allie Hawkins in a pair of tight sets, edging MCM's player 7-5 before clinching the match-up 6-3 in the final.
Dallas Baptist will complete the tournament Friday with a pair of matches. First is an 8:30 AM meeting against Southern Nazarene. Wrapping up the NCCAA Regional will be a 3:30 start time versus Colorado Christian later in the day.
