Box Score A four-run fifth inning lifted the Dallas Baptist Baseball Team to a come from behind 8-5 win at Indiana State on Saturday afternoon. The victory evens the pivotal conference series at one game apiece, heading into tomorrow's weekend finale.
Trailing 3-0 through the first three innings, Dallas Baptist (28-14, 7-4) plated a run in the fourth before erupting for four runs in the fifth.
A
David Martinelli lead-off single sparked the Patriots' rally. With two outs and Martinelli standing at third,
Trevin Sonnier's routine grounder to second was bobbled by Indiana State's Dererk Hannah's, allowing Martinelli to score and keep the Patriot inning alive.
Following a
Drew Turbin walk,
Mike Wesolowski doubled to right-center to tie the game at three.
Daniel Salters continued the two-out hit barrage with a two-run single to left-center, handing DBU their first lead of the weekend.
In the sixth, Martinelli belted his fourth homerun of the season on a solo shot that cleared the wall in right.
After Indiana State (28-13, 8-6) answered with two runs of their own in the sixth, the Patriots responded with a two spot in the top of the seventh on a two-run homerun to right by Salters. The sophomore catcher finished the day with a season-high five RBI and now has a team-leading 38 runs driven in on the season.
On the hill,
Cy Sneed worked five plus innings, striking out a season-high eight. Redshirt-senior,
Josh Urban, came on in relief in the sixth and worked two scoreless innings, before giving way to closer,
Brandon Koch.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Koch induced a double-play ball off the bat of Jacob Hayes to get out of the inning. In the ninth, Koch worked a 1-2-3 inning, to earn his team-leading sixth save of the season.
Offensively, DBU totaled 10 hits to go along with the eight runs. "I thought we were a little aggressive early in the game versus their starter. Patriot Head Baseball Coach,
Dan Heefner said. "As we got into the middle innings, we made some adjustments and were able to begin stringing some hits together."
The win for Sneed gives him a team-best seventh of the season and his eight strikeouts were just two shy of tying career-high. "I was proud of the way Cy competed on the mound," Heefner remarked. "One of the things about Cy is just his energy in the dugout and even today when he came out of the game, just his energy in the dugout ignited our team."
Dallas Baptist and Indiana State will meet tomorrow in the rubber match of the series finale. Following tomorrow's game, the Patriots travel to Norman, Oklahoma, on Tuesday to face the Oklahoma Sooners in the final game of a four-game road trip.
