Patriots Drop Finale to Missouri State

Box Score

The DBU Patriot Baseball Team dropped the finale of a three-game series, Sunday, falling 10-5 to visiting Missouri State University. The Patriots failed to complete the sweep, after earning wins of 6-5 and 1-0 in the first two games of the series.

DBU drops to 31-15, 9-6 in Missouri Valley play. Missouri State now stands at 20-24 overall, 7-8 in league play. For the season, DBU took 5-of-6 from the Bears, including a three-game sweep at MSU, back on March 14-15.

The Bears got in the board in the third, as Spencer Johnson hit a towering fly ball to right, which was almost corralled by David Martinelli as he crashed into the wall, resulting in a triple. Joey Hawkins grounded out the next at bat, scoring Johnson to give the visiting club a 1-0 lead.

The offense exploded for Missouri State in the fourth, as the Bears tallied seven runs on five hits in the inning, including a grand slam off the bat of Tate Matheny. The visitors tallied another pair in the fifth, scoring on an RBI single and sacrifice fly, running their lead to 10-0.

DBU finally broke through in seventh inning, capitalizing on a pair of Missouri State errors, pushing a pair of runs across the plate. The Patriots scored three more in the eighth, tallying single runs on a bases loaded hit by pitch from Martinelli, a ground out by Nash Knight, and the final run scoring on an error by Bears third baseman Dylan Becker.

DBU was led on the offensive end by two hits from Daniel Salters, including his team-leading sixth triple of the season. Martinelli, KJ Alexander, and Knight each tallied one RBI, with Wall scoring twice to lead the team.

Cory Taylor (3-4) started and worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs, though only three were earned, on seven hits. The sophomore walked three and struck out four. Sean Stutzman, Cody Beam, and Jay Calhoun combined to toss four shutout innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit, striking out three and walking none.

"Those guys did a good job out of the bullpen," said DBU Head Coach Dan Heefner following the loss. "They came in and treated the game like it was 0-0, which is always what you want from your bullpen."

Missouri State was led by a solid performance by Matheny, who tallied three hits in five at bats, collecting the four RBI and run scored on the grand slam. Johnson added three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. Clay Murphy (4-3) worked seven innings, allowing two runs, one of them earned, on five hits.

The Patriots complete the four-game home stretch, Tuesday, hosting Texas Tech University at Horner Ballpark. That contest will get underway at 2 p.m.
