THE RUNDOWN
No. 25 DBU Women's Soccer shut out St. Edward's 3-0 at Patriot Soccer Field tonight. The game, dominated by DBU's offense, marks the Patriot's second shutout of the year.
The Patriots controlled the first half, keeping the ball on their attacking third for the majority of the time. In total, DBU made 11 shot attempts in the first 45. Sophomore Joeli Benson started the Patriots off with a goal in the 19th minute. Benson received Taylor Tufts's corner kick and headed it past SEU's freshman goalkeeper Daria Schlumbohm. The Hilltoppers were unable to make it past DBU's defensive line of Rachel Allen and Parker Coe, making only two shots in the half. The Patriots led at halftime 1-0.
The Hilltoppers offense began to gain some momentum in the early minutes of the second half but were unable to capitalize on their chances. DBU's defense held them to just two more shots in the final 45. The Patriot offense did not back down, making multiple opportunities inside the box.
In the 55th minute, "Marta" Michelle Gonzalez shot from just outside the 18-yard box, but the goal was denied by the crossbar. 20 minutes later, she found another opportunity off a cross by Taylor Tufts that resulted in a goal, putting the Patriots up 2-0.
A series of subs left Head Coach Marcus Wood's bench as the game's final 15 minutes approached. Among those was junior Kathryn Mullis who made DBU's third and final goal in the 78th minute after receiving a pass from Haley Roberson.
St. Edward's hustle did not die down, but their efforts were cut short with the final seconds of the game coming to a close. Freshman goalkeeper Carmen Lopez earned her second career shutout and DBU's win over SEU earns them three points to contribute to the Lone Star Conference standings where they currently sit in second.
