THE RUNDOWN
In one of their strongest defensive showings to date, DBU defeated Eastern New Mexico in a three-set affair in Portales, New Mexico, on Saturday afternoon. The victory improved the Lady Patriots' Lone Star Conference record to 4-0 and extended their win streak to five matches.
DBU (11-4, 4-0) started the match up 9-5, but the Greyhounds (8-9, 0-4) charged to tie it up at 12. After trading the next two points, the Lady Patriots swiped 11 straight points and 12 of the last 13 to claim the first set.
The hot streak carried over into the second frame for DBU, as they took a quick 5-1 lead, but it was ENMU's turn to play its tune, as the Greyhounds moved in front 6-5 and stretched it as far as 18-13. Head Coach
Jordan Fish called a timeout, and her squad flipped the script in a hurry. The Lady Patriots allowed ENMU to rack up only two more points for the rest of the set, and by doing so, DBU gave themselves a chance at a sweep entering set three.
The rhythm stayed with the Lady Patriots in what would be the final frame. Four early kills by
Karly Wells pushed DBU to a 6-2 advantage, and her squad rode the momentum, increasing their distance from the Greyhounds to as many as eight. Down 9-17, ENMU began to creep back into the game with a 5-1 run, but the Lady Patriots closed the door on a
Delaney Fuller spike down the line to seal the deal.
