THE RUNDOWNÂ
Offensive fireworks fly over Patriot Soccer Field as No. 11 DBU defeats Midwestern State in a 5-0 affair. Five Patriots had the chance to earn goals against one of the top-ranked goalkeepers in the Lone Star Conference.
Haley Roberson kick-started DBU's offense in the ninth minute by scoring on a pass from Angelina Olmos and McKenna Vela. The ball remained in DBU's attacking half until a handball off of Midwestern State prompted a penalty kick, which Kaleigh Naizer gracefully delivered in the 19th minute. Up two goals with no signs of slowing down, the Patriots continued to scan the field for opportunities. In the 25th minute, Angelina Olmos connected with Anne Louthan, who fired a shot outside the 18-yard box and into the back of the net. The Mustangs, visibly frustrated, managed to keep the Patriots from scoring for another 16 minutes until Elise Borders's corner kick ricocheted off of Parker Coe's head and was flicked past Allison Dellis in the 41st minute. Annie Severide was responsible for that fourth goal, making her the 10th leading scorer in program history. DBU earned three more set-piece opportunities before the scoreboard signaled for the break. Â
The Patriots entered the pitch after halftime with the same determination as before. The starting 11 made their way onto the field, and DBU and MSU fought for possession in the midfield. Senior Breanna Bowen and the Patriot defense fended off several shots by the Mustangs, then reclaimed the momentum. Six shots were attempted before Grace Berry delivered DBU's fifth and final goal in the 83rd minute thanks to one-touches by Emily Bates and freshman Emma Croley. Even in the last seven minutes of the match, DBU continued to look for offensive chances. The MSU Mustangs could not break through the barrier that was DBU's back line, and the Patriots secured the victory.
