DBU Volleyball Faces Tough Regional Weekend

The Dallas Baptist Lady Patriot Volleyball Team traveled to Topeka, Kansas this weekend to participate in the Lady Blues Fall Classic, hosted by Washburn University. After an opening loss against the tournament host, 1-3, the Lady Patriots defeated Southwest Baptist University, 3-2, on Friday evening. Standing at 1-1 headed into Saturday's matches, the Lady Patriots were swept by Nebraska-Omaha in the morning game, followed by yet another tough loss against 11th-ranked Emporia State in the afternoon match, 0-3. The Lady Patriots are now 9-11 on the season, but remain 3-1 in Heartland Conference action.

DBU captured the opening set of the tournament against the seventh-ranked Lady Blues from Washburn, 30-28, but lost the three ensuing sets, 19-25, 19-25, and 10-25. DBU Freshman Krystal Wunderlich was the lone Lady Patriot in double-figure kills, finishing the match with 14.

In the second match on Friday evening, the Lady Patriots picked up their sole win of the tournament, defeating the Southwest Baptist Bearcats in five sets. DBU dominated the first pair of sets, winning 25-23 and 25-19, but the Bearcats rallied to win the next two, 25-20 and 25-23, to force a tie-breaker. The Lady Patriots used ten kills and a .368 attack percentage in the fifth set to edge out SBU, 15-11.

Wunderlich led the way for DBU once again with 18 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Becky Swann added 14 kills of her own, while Junior Kaylyn Frink and Sophomore Christina Steinkruger added 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Frink also led the Lady Patriots in digs with 21.

On Saturday, DBU faced Nebraska-Omaha and Emporia State, only to be swept in three sets in both matches. In the opening match, UNO outhit the Lady Patriots .352 to .020 in team attack percentage, finishing off the Lady Patriots in three sets, 15-25, 19-25, and 10-25.

The final game of the tournament didn't get much better for DBU as they were swept in three games again, this time to Emporia State. DBU fell to the Hornets 19-25, 19-25, and 9-25, after a low .152 attack percentage compared to .327 from Emporia.

Just like she had done in the first two games of the tournament, Wunderlich led the way offensively for the Lady Patriots with nine kills, while Freshman Greyson Reed added 15 defensive digs for DBU.

Up next for the Lady Patriots is Texas Woman's University on Tuesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Denton at the Kitty Winter Magee Arena.
