Patriots Lose on Last Second Shot

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team lost a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon at the Burg Center to the University of the Incarnate Word. The Patriots overcame a 14 point second half deficit, only to fall on a last second Cardinal three pointer.

The loss drops the Patriots to 17-10 overall, and 10-6 in the Heartland Conference. The Patriots are now tied for third place as they head into the Heartland Conference Tournament set to begin this Thursday in San Antonio, TX.

The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 19-5 lead only eight minutes into the game, and held a double-digit lead for the majority of the half. Eddie Gloviak's jumper with 1:00 remaining pulled the Patriots to within 11, for a 35-24 deficit at the break.

It wasn't until Bryan Baumann buried back-to-back threes with 14:39 remaining in the game, that the Patriots were able to trim their deficit to single digits, 42-33. That sparked a 14-2 Patriot run, capped by Braxton Adamson's jumper two and half minutes later, and made it a 42-41 game.

Jared Whitmire's three tied the game for the first time at the 11:07 mark. The Patriots took their first lead of the night with 6:44 remaining after Baumann found Jordan McGowen open for a three. The Cardinals responded and pushed their lead back up to six after Pierce Caldwell connected on a pair of free throws.

McGowen took over late in the game scoring seven straight points and drawing a charge to give the Patriots possession of the ball, trailing by two with 29 seconds remaining. After coming up with a loose ball, Baumann slashed through the lane and tied the game with a layup, 70-70.

Incarnate Word chose not to call a timeout and Eric Stewart drained a contested, deep three to give the Cardinals the narrow, three point win.

Gloviak, a senior playing in his last game at the Burg Center, led the way for the Patriots with 19 points and six rebounds. McGowen followed closely behind with 18 points and six rebounds, while Baumann finished with 11 points.

The Patriots will return to action Thursday, March 4, at the Heartland Conference Tournament, hosted by St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
