Patriot Rally Falls Short Against Seattle

Box Score

After sweeping their three game series against Grambling State one week ago, the Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team dropped the first game of the series against Seattle University on Thursday evening. The 7-5 loss drops the Patriots to 21-16 on the season.

Freshman Will Lane was dealt the loss for the Patriots after pitching five innings, allowing three runs on three hits, and striking out four. With the loss, Lane moves to 3-3 on the season.

After a scoreless first for both teams, Lane struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the second inning, before giving up a one run homerun to Riley Tompkins, to make it an early 1-0 lead for the Redhawks. A walk followed by a Redhawk double, added another run for Seattle to make it 2-0.

The Patriots finally got on the board in the fourth when Ryan Behmanesh connected on his sixth homerun of the season, a shot to left field, making it a 2-1 game.

After a one run fourth for Seattle, the Redhawks used four hits in the sixth to score four runs and take a commanding 7-1 lead.

The Patriot bats finally came alive in the eighth as they scored four runs, to pull themselves within two. Senior Travis Meiners led off with a single and later advanced to third on a double by Freshman Austin Elkins. Junior Tyler Robbins scored Meiners with a sacrifice fly, and Junior Jason Krizan kept the inning alive with his RBI single, scoring another run for the Patriots. After Freshman Duncan McAlpine singled to right field, Krizan scored on an error, making it 7-4. Another error by the Redhawks later in the inning allowed Senior Ryan Enos to score the final run of the inning, but the Patriots still trailed, 7-5.

DBU Junior Pitcher Jarrod Stafford held the Redhawks scoreless in the eighth as he retired the side in order, but the Patriots only managed one hit in the ninth, as they fell 7-5.

Game two of the Seattle series will be played tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. Central Time.
