THE LEAD – The Dallas Baptist Baseball Team wraps-up its four-game home stand with a single, non-conference match-up on Monday at 3 PM versus Brigham Young University. DBU (11-4) continues to boast one of its hottest starts in program history since becoming Division I, including a 9-1 span at Horner Ballpark.
The Patriots have won three weekend series so far, but have dropped back-to-back lone weekday contest to go 1-2 on the campaign. It is the first time DBU plays on a Monday. This four-game home stand concludes a stretch of five games in seven days for a Patriots Baseball Team.
MOST RECENT ACTION – It was another weekend full of nail-biting affairs that saw DBU prevail in the last pair to claim consecutive three-game series, and the third on the campaign. All have come in the friendly confines for the Patriots.
On Thursday, the home squad snapped its 7-0 span at Horner Ballpark, dropping a 6-4 final, to Oral Roberts. Junior,
Paul Voelker retired eight straight batters at one point, but three-run innings in the second and sixth for the Golden Eagles would be enough to take the series opener.
The Patriots did get on the board first, on a two-run single to center field by junior,
Nash Knight, in the bottom of the first frame. After surrendering its first lead, DBU would tie the affair on a single by redshirt sophomore,
Justin Wall.
ORU would again respond with a three-run top of the frame and the Patriots would fall short in its first home setback of the year.
On Friday, the Patriots were able to win in dramatic fashion, something becoming very familiar to the Patriots Baseball Team, as they won 5-4 in the middle game of the series. Five of the club's last six games had been decided by a run, and DBU was 4-1 in those one-run decisions.
Both squads scored in their first at bats, with the home club taking a 2-1 advantage off consecutive hits from sophomore,
Daniel Salters, and Wall. In the third inning, freshman,
David Martinelli doubled in two more runs to give the Patriots a 4-1 edge.
Junior,
Cy Sneed, took the mound and pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned), seven hits, four walks, and matching a season-high six strikeouts.
Knotted at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Wall was able to belt his first home run of the season to give DBU a 5-4 lead. The left fielder's solo homer would be the game-winner as the Patriots evened the series.
The Fort Worth, Texas, native notched his second game-winner of the campaign, adding to his late heroics exactly a week later when he smacked a bases loaded, walk-off single Feb. 28 against Penn.
Sophomore,
Brandon Koch, continued his stellar stretch, recording the final six outs and not allowing a hit. The right hander walked one and fanned three in two innings of work.
Dallas Baptist did have to come back again in the rubber match-up on Saturday, but didn't wait as late to overcome an early deficit. After trailing 4-0 through the first four innings, redshirt sophomore,
Trevin Sonnier, drove in one of his game-high, three RBI to put the Patriots in the run column.
The home squad would outscore ORU 9-1 the rest of the ballgame, beginning with a five-run fifth inning to complete the come from behind effort. With the game still close at 6-4, DBU added a run in the sixth and tacked a trio of runs in the eighth to insure the series win.
Despite being outhit 13-10, the Patriots took advantage of nine walks to get in scoring position and capitalized on opportunities. Leading the Patriots was senior,
Mike Wesolowski, with three hits. Also tallying multi-hit afternoons were sophomore,
Austin Listi, and Sonnier.
Redshirt senior,
Josh Urban, pitched 4.1 innings of relief for the Patriots, scattering two hits while walking three and striking out four. He shut down a potent Golden Eagles offense and kept DBU close, never relinquishing the edge once his squad went up.
PLAYERS THAT ARE HOT – Wesolowski remains the top batter on the squad, carrying a team-best .356 batting average with 21 in 59 total at bats. His season-long, eight-game hitting streak ended on Thursday versus ORU, but the first baseman collected a three-hit performance on Saturday's finale.
The senior also crossed the plate three times in the rubber game victory on Saturday. Wesolowski has reached base safely in 14 of 15 games he's started on the campaign, also totaling 11 RBI, 5 doubles, a homer, and six walks. He leads the club with eight hit-by-pitches.
Wall has been on a roll, clobbering hits in the past four-straight games, and six of the last seven. During that stretch, the outfielder has collected 11 of 17 hits and tallied a .392 clip. Against the Golden Eagles, Wall smacked five hits and combined to grab four RBI, including the game-winner in a multi-RBI effort on Friday.
Knight posted three strong contests in the weekend affairs, collecting three hits in 10 at bats. In the setback on Thursday, the third baseman collected a pair of RBI bringing his season total to 11. The Denton, Texas, native, scored in the whole trio of games, with two counting in the 10-5 Saturday win. He also is swinging .288 on the campaign.
Salters has posted the third highest batting average with a .298 clip, and has totaled 17 hits which also is third on the team. Six of the sophomore's 10 games he has tallied a hit have counted as multi-hit performances. His season-high was a three-hit day against Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 16. The catcher also belted his first homer and tacked on a trio of RBI for a season best in the victory.
Making his fourth-straight start, and eighth on the season is outfielder, Martinelli. The rookie has combined for six hits over that stretch, including a string of three hits in the marathon game at TCU last week.
The native of Waxahachie, Texas, has compiled a .290 batting average, and .375 average over past quartet of games during the week. He does have a home run and three RBI, and picked up a double in Tuesday's match-up.
SHUTTING THE DOOR – The Patriots have established a tough pitching presence in the early part of the year. Through 141.2 innings, DBU hurlers have allowed 61 runs, 47 earned, to compile a 2.99 ERA. In addition, the Patriots lead the Missouri Valley Conference with 149 punch outs.
The Bullpen continues to work hard logging quality innings, led by Urban and Koch.
Urban has gone a team-best 15.2 innings for the relief corps and boast a staff-low 0.57 ERA. The Austin, Texas, native hasn't allowed a run in the last seven innings, including tying a season-long 4.1 innings outing on Saturday. He's fanned 19 opposing hitters to rank second out of the bullpen.
Leading that category is the right handed hurler from Plano, Texas, Koch. The sophomore has posted 20 strikeouts and continues to deliver in high pressure situations, including the last 2.0 innings on Friday's 5-4 dramatic triumph.
Since allowing a run in his season-debut, Koch has thrown nine-straight scoreless innings and has only given up four hits, while building an ERA that sits at 0.90 to tie for second on the squad.
Sophomore,
Sean Stutzman, has also been effective in a long-relief role, combining for 10 innings and also holding a 0.90 ERA. He worked the final 3.2 of the 6-4 loss on Thursday night, but rested a drained bullpen while keeping the home club within a manageable deficit. The left hander scattered two hits and a pair of walks while fanning three.
SCOUTING BYU – The Cougars (7-10) will meet DBU at Horner Ballpark on Monday evening. The visiting club split a four-game series this weekend at Nicholls State University, and dropped the final two affairs.
As a club, the Cougars are hitting .289 with eight different players tallying above a .300 clip.
Dillon Robinson leads a potent offense with a .386 batting average, including three doubles and nine RBI. Eric Urry is right behind boasting a .375 average and holds a team-high .456 on-base percentage.
Kelton Caldwell holds the team-high in runs batted in with 14, one of the team's three long balls, and is swinging a .307 average with the bat.
On the hill, the staff for BYU has tossed 150.2 innings, striking out 97 and walking 55. The Cougars' pitching has compiled a 4.18 team ERA, led by Hayden Rogers with a 1.96 clip. Six different arms have started for BYU this season.
SERIES HISTORY – The programs have met just once before in 2004, and BYU prevailed to hold the 1-0 series in the records. Head Coach,
Dan Heefner, has never faced this squad and Monday will be the first time his Patriots take the diamond versus the team from Provo, Utah.
Last season, BYU went 32-21 overall and 15-9 in the Mountain West Conference.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE – Dallas Baptist will begin a four-game road trip on March 14-16 at Missouri State University. Times for first pitch are slated at 3:05 PM on Friday, 2:05 PM on Saturday, and 1:05 PM on Sunday. After the trek to Springfield, MIssouri, the Patriots will wrap-up the trip at the University of Texas on March 18.
