THE RUNDOWN
DBU (13-3, 4-1) pulled off a dramatic five-set win over the UT Tyler (10-6, 3-2) at The Burg Center on Wednesday night. DBU bested UT Tyler in hitting percentage in every set.
Â
The first set was everything that was expected from these two teams coming into the match. It was tight all the way, with neither team leading by more than three, bar the set-deciding point. A late 6-2 surge including a trio of kills from
Delaney Fuller sealed the set for DBU.
Â
UT Tyler looked to rebound and broke out with 7 consecutive points to go up, 14-7. Trailing 21-13, DBU pieced together a 7-2 run, narrowing the gap to 2. Despite holding UT Tyler to only .129 hitting, the Lady Patriots dropped the second. DBU's attack percentage of .304 in the frame is the 2nd highest mark the team has registered while losing a set this season.
Â
UT jumped to an early advantage in set three, 10-6, and maintained control regardless of threatening charges by DBU. However, DBU managed to tie the game at 23, but UT Tyler pushed a kill and an ace across to pull ahead in the set count.
Â
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Patriots of DBU found themselves in possibly the most grueling set of their season. After taking an 11-10 lead, DBU allowed a 5-0 UT Tyler run before piecing together a 5-1 stretch of its own to tie the game at 16. With more back-and-forth play—to the tune of 17 ties and 8 lead changes in the set—DBU snuck away with the frame to force a deciding 5th set.
Â
The fifth frame played much like its predecessor. Tied, 4-4, DBU went on a three-point spurt and didn't look back. Though never leading by more than four in the set, a pair of
Shaylee Shore blocks and a generous offense spurred DBU to claim their closest match of the year.
